Public Sector Contracts

local authority workLeicestershire and Staffordshire Scientific Services provides an analytical and scientific advisory service to a large number of local authorities in the Midlands and further afield. The purpose of this is

  • to contribute scientific and technical expertise in order to protect the public and support the enforcement of laws surrounding health and safety and consumer protection (for example the Food Safety Act, the Agricultural Act and consumer protection legislation.)
  • to research and survey food products and cooked meals to obtain information which is used to promote public health (for example we might look at the nutritional value of school meals or meals served in old people's homes.)
  • to visit factories where food is made to provide scientific and technical expertise to ensure that the food manufactured is safe, and accurately described.
  • in general to contribute to efforts to help ensure public health and safety.

The partnership is also keen to work with local authorities on research proposals which generate new information regarding public health.

Quality - at the heart of everything we do

Leicestershire and Staffordshire Scientific Services places quality at the heart of everything we do. The partnership has a dedicated Quality Manager - Dr Paul Wright who ensures that laboratory processes are regularly audited. There are also tight controls to ensure the accuracy, reliability and repeatability of all tests.

Performance Management

We have a number of measures in place to promote performance improvements and ensure we learn from customer feedback.

Organisational Culture

We have stringent and active policies relating to our

  • environmental performance,
  • equality and diversity, and
  • health and safety policies.

In particular Staffordshire has the environmental accreditation BS14000 and Leicestershire has, for the third year in a row, been awarded the ROSPA Gold Medal for Health and Safety. Leicestershire County Council has also been named 'Council of the Year' by the Local Government Chronicle.

The Benefits of Working in Partnership

Operating as a public sector partnership means that we can offer an enhanced service and benefit from additional knowledge, experience, skills and capacity.
