Environmental Analysis
Leicestershire and Staffordshire Scientific Services runs a very highly regarded environmental analysis service.
As well as testing pollution levels in the Midlands, we test pollutants around the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and in Qatar and New Zealand. Clients include land developers, builders and architects, environmental consultancies, specialist renovators and civil engineers.
Last year the partnership analysed more than 15,000 environmental samples. Tests carried out included the analysis of:
- airborne and traffic pollutants (NOX) which is UKAS accredited - see below
- surface and groundwater, effluent and seepages
- materials testing including paint, concrete and aggregates
- waste disposal testing
- contaminated land
- plants and soil
- fuels including biofuel
- corrosion or limescale deposition
- coke and coal testing
- testing for lead, chromium, mercury and arsenic

Testing of Traffic Pollutants - What Is NOX and Why Is It A Problem
NOX is the term for highly reactive nitrogen oxides which are formed when fuel is burned at high temperatures - in vehicles and other industrial and domestic sources. NOX is involved in the formation of Ozone at ground level. It can cause smog, acid rain, respiratory problems and lead to global warming. The monitoring of NOX is essential in helping to identify and implement measures to improve air quality and public health.
We offer NOX determination, NOX speciation, SOX analysis and VOC measurement.
Measuring Traffic Pollutants - A Well Established, High Quality Service
Leicestershire and Staffordshire Scientific Services has been preparing, supplying and analysing diffusion tubes for NOX analysis for over 15 years and is UKAS accredited for these analyses.
A 'nitrogen dioxide passive diffusion tube' collects the pollutants during the exposure period. It is then resealed and returned to the laboratory for analysis. We offer a particularly competitive rate for the analysis.
Specific Quality Assurance for these tests
The laboratory participates in the Workplace Analysis Scheme for Proficiency (WASP) for nitrogen dioxide tubes and utilises a QA/QC solution supplied by Netcen. The laboratory also participates in a field inter-comparison scheme which is controlled by Netcen and organised by the Health and Safety Laboratory (an Agency of the Health and Safety Executive - HSE).

Surface and Ground Water
Surface and ground waters can be sampled for pollution control, source identification or valuation purposes. Investigations can relate to a specific pollution incident or be for long term monitoring to detect contamination at an early stage.
Leicestershire and Staffordshire Scientific Services offers expertise in sampling, and in chemical and bacteriological analysis of environmental waters. Call us for details.
Our Credentials
Leicestershire and Staffordshire Scientific Services is an efficient and reliable scientific service offering testing and analysis, advice and support to customers in the public and private sector.
We have four Public Analysts, thirty-five well-qualified, experienced staff and two laboratories, based in Leicester and Stafford, accredited to UKAS Quality Standard ISO/IEC 17025 which are both Official Food Enforcement Laboratories
